How much water do I need to drink?
Amniotic fluid acts as a window, helping us achieve the best possible views of your baby during your ultrasound.
Please follow the instructions below:
Preparing for your ultrasound
The quality and clarity of your ultrasound images depends largely on the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby. This is especially important when you want those cute chubby face images in the third trimester.
- We highly recommend aiming to drink around 3 litres of water each day for at least 7 days leading up to your appointment if you’re hoping to see beautiful images of your baby’s face. Staying well hydrated can help improve the volume and clarity of the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, which plays an important role in image quality (unless advised otherwise by your healthcare professional). Please note: Drinking large amounts of water the day before your scan won’t significantly improve your images—it will simply fill your bladder. It takes time for amniotic fluid levels to build, so consistent hydration over several days makes the biggest difference. We can often see straight away when scanning if the amniotic fluid levels are ideal for capturing those gorgeous face images.
- Wear a 2-piece outfit in case we need to reposition you during your scan.
- Try to book when your baby is usually active, and bring a cold drink along.
- Avoid a big meal beforehand— keep it light or bring a snack.
Reminder: Baby runs the show on the day and may not always cooperate.
If you are between 10 and 13 weeks pregnant, arrive at the scan with a full bladder. Don’t empty until we say you can.
If you are between 14 and 19 weeks, arrive with a fullish bladder and empty before the scan starts.
After 20 weeks you do not need a full bladder for your appointment.
