Miracle Beginnings 3D/4D Ultrasound

Before your appointment, please read through our Frequently Asked Questions below. And if you need any more information, don’t hesitate to get in touch – Claire will be happy to answer your questions.

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound, also known as a sonogram, uses high frequency sound waves to create images inside your body. At Miracle Beginnings, we use ultrasound to take live images of your unborn baby inside the womb.

What can I expect during an ultrasound?

Ultrasounds are non-invasive, making them a completely safe, comfortable and painless procedure.

During the ultrasound, a small amount of gel will be applied to your stomach, then the technician will gently move a probe over the same area. The images will be displayed on a monitor or screen, allowing you to see your baby inside the womb!

This procedure will be the same, whether you choose to have your scan in-studio or at home.

What is the difference between 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasounds?

2D ultrasounds have been used for years and provide basic two-dimensional, black and white images of your baby.

3D ultrasound is a more advanced method, which captures a true, three-dimensional image of your baby, often allowing us to see specific facial features and well-defined formation.

4D ultrasound provides a moving three-dimensional image of your baby in the womb. With a 4D ultrasound, we can capture your baby yawning, turning their head, sucking their thumb, or even waving!

Are 3D and 4D ultrasound scans safe?

Rest assured, both 3D and 4D ultrasounds use the exact same intensity as a normal 2D ultrasound. With 4D, it is the extra processing that allows the images to appear to be moving in real time.

As with all ultrasounds, no radiation or harmful agents will be used during your Miracle Beginnings ultrasound – remember, the images are simply created by high frequency sound waves.

Is this a medical scan?

No. It’s important to understand that our ultrasounds are not medical scans – they are used for photography imaging only. They are completely elective, allowing you to capture images of your unborn baby to treasure and share with family and friends.

Miracle Beginnings cannot provide any medical advice or diagnosis in any way. For example, while you will be able to listen to your baby’s heartbeat during your visit, we are unable to confirm how many beats per minute or provide any other form of medical advice.

We always strongly recommend that you have had your most up to date medical scan before coming to us, as any abnormalities would be noted at your medical scan. We are a non-diagnostic service, and do not look out for abnormalities or anything that might require medical intervention.

Do I need a doctor's referral for a Miracle Beginnings ultrasound?

No, you do not require a doctor’s referral for our services, as our ultrasound imaging services are non-diagnostic. They are an elective procedure, for photographic purposes only. Please refer to the question above for more detailed information.

Will you be able to tell the gender of the baby?

If you would like your baby’s gender to remain a surprise, please let us know beforehand!

Sometimes it’s not so easy to distinguish the gender, due to your baby’s position, developmental stage, the amount of amniotic fluid around baby, or your own body mass. At Miracle Beginnings, we will endeavor to do our very best to determine the gender, but will not guarantee our prediction.

What will determine the quality of the ultrasound images?

At Miracle Beginnings, we make it our number one priority to achieve the absolute best ultrasound images of your baby on the day of your ultrasound. However, there are some factors that might affect the quality of the images.

The fetal position of your baby inside the womb is the key factor in capturing good quality images. If your baby is facing forward in the womb looking towards Mums belly, we can generally capture excellent images of your baby. But if baby is looking towards mum’s spine, or has their face pressed up against the placenta, it can make it more challenging to capture good quality images. Some babies may also have their hands and feet in front of their face.

On the day, we will gently try to make your baby move as much as possible, by getting you to stretch, or roll on to your side, or have something cold to drink, so that we can capture the best possible image for you.

What if my baby is breech?

As we said above, the fetal position of your baby is the key factor in capturing high quality images. With breech position, your baby’s head is located at the top of your uterus and the feet are down – which can make it harder to capture clear ultrasound images.

If your baby is in breech position, it would be best to wait and see if he or she turns before scheduling your 3D/4D ultrasound. If by 31 weeks your baby is still breech, we can go ahead with an appointment – if your amniotic fluid is nice and clear we should be able to achieve some good images for you.

Is there anything I should do prior to my appointment?

There are a few things you can do, to have the best chance of getting clear, detailed images of your baby on the day.

Most importantly, you’ll want to be well hydrated, as this will ensure your amniotic fluid is clear, giving you much clearer images. Try to drink at least one litre of water daily, for several days before your visit.

About half an hour before your appointment, you might like to drink a fruit juice or eat something sweet, to wake baby up before your ultrasound. This will help improve the chances of capturing moving images during the scan.

What should I wear to my ultrasound appointment?

It’s always a good idea to wear a two-piece outfit to your appointment, rather than a dress. This way, we can simply lift up your shirt for easy and comfortable access to your stomach, with no need for you to remove any clothing.

What if we are not able to get images on the day?

We promise to make every effort to obtain the best possible images of your baby for you. Miracle Beginnings wants you to be 100% satisfied with your overall experience. If we are unable to obtain clear 3D/4D images during your scan, we will arrange a return appointment free of charge.

What is your cancellation policy?

If for any reason you need to cancel or change your appointment we ask that you contact us at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. With this notice, we will be happy to reschedule your scan to another time. Please note that a 50% cancellation fee will be charged if your appointment is cancelled within 24 hours.
